Where are you from, and what are you currently studying, or have you studied, and at which institution?

I am from China, and I’m currently pursuing a Master of Virtual Production at Flinders University, focusing on motion capture technology and concept art.

What motivated you to choose Adelaide over other Australian cities for your studies?

I chose Adelaide because one of my high school classmates studied here and they often shared stories about the city, the climate, culture, and beautiful scenery; it all sounded very appealing to me. I became interested in experiencing it myself. More importantly, I was drawn to the Virtual Production program at Flinders University. It perfectly aligns with my creative goals, as I hope to combine 2D and 3D techniques to create more innovative and engaging works.

I really enjoy living here, as Adelaide offers great educational opportunities and has a slower pace of life, which helps me focus on my studies and creativity. The public transport is convenient, and the beaches are a highlight, especially in the warmer seasons. Adelaide also has a lot of art exhibitions, music events, and cultural festivals. Overall, it's a comfortable, vibrant city with a great lifestyle.

How did you select your course and institution, and what resources or support services have you found most helpful at your institution?

I chose this path because I've always been interested in how art and technology work together. Virtual production lets me break from traditional methods and explore new creative possibilities. It has great potential in entertainment, and I want to contribute to the future of visual storytelling

My teachers have been incredibly supportive throughout my studies. Whenever I have questions or run into challenges, they’re always there to help and respond quickly. I also really appreciate that we have free access to the computer labs on campus, as my major requires powerful software and hardware; this has been essential.  The academic environment at Flinders is very open, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and practical experience, while providing me with abundant resources and support for my academic growth. I’m lucky to have encountered many great mentors who have provided me with invaluable help.

One of my favourite parts of student life is the weekly Thursday activities at Oasis. It’s a relaxing and welcoming space where students can connect, share stories, and make new friends. I genuinely enjoy spending time there, it makes me feel part of a caring and diverse community.

Describe a moment when you felt truly at home in Adelaide.

There have been so many moments in Adelaide when I truly felt “at home.” To me, Adelaide is a warm and welcoming city, and I often capture these heartwarming experiences through my artwork. Whether it’s a smile from a stranger or the genuine help from local friends, these little moments all give me the feeling of home.

One special moment was when I took my four-year-old son to the Adelaide Farmers' Market. He walked up to a bakery stall with his own money, wanting to buy a bagel. The baker looked at him and said, “This one’s free for you today, little buddy, it’s my treat.” That simple, kind gesture touched me deeply and made me feel like I truly belonged here. I also shared it with others, and many people said it warmed their hearts too. It’s moments like these that make Adelaide feel like home.

If you were to take a friend on a day trip around Adelaide, where would you take them and why?

I’d start the day by taking them to a well-known local café for a great cup of coffee. Adelaide has so many charming spots! Then we’d begin a city walk, exploring the Central Market and Chinatown, soaking in the vibrant culture and delicious food. After that, we’d catch a ride to the German Village in the Adelaide Hills called Hahndorf. It’s the perfect place for a relaxed afternoon. We would enjoy a hearty German pork knuckle for lunch, take a leisurely stroll through the quaint streets, and of course, take lots of photos. To finish the day, we’d head to the beach to watch the sunset and enjoy an ice cream by the sea. It would be a perfect mix of culture, food, and nature, just like Adelaide itself.

What are your future aspirations?

My future career plan is to combine my creativity and technical skills in virtual production, film, or animation, focusing on concept art. I aim to work in an innovative team, using motion capture technology and virtual production to create immersive digital experiences. However, I specialise in the early stages, like concept art. I am looking for positions related to virtual production, 3D modeling, and animation to gain hands-on experience and further develop my skills.
