“The Master of Civil Engineering at Flinders University covers everything from hydrogeology, traffic systems, and project management to geotechnical and structural engineering.”

“Flinders offers the perfect course structure – with world-class faculty and exposure to industry,” says Inderjit. “Combined with an affordable fee structure, the university prepares students for the current industry demands.”

Practical placements

The lure of a 12-week industry placement sweetened the deal for the Master’s student.

“The course also includes a compulsory work placement, which gives additional exposure to work practices in the industry. Moreover, the Tonsley Innovation District gives students direct access to a number of businesses operating in industry.”

Alongside the placement, Inderjit assures that the labs at Tonsley are stocked with all the important equipment that is utilised in real-world industry practice.

“Our structure laboratory includes all the testing machines that are a part of construction sites, and we perform experiments that are similar to what you would experience on-site. Plus the computer labs are equipped with all the necessary software such as AutoCAD, Sidra, and Invertor.”

Post-graduate career outcomes

These experiments allow Inderjit to improve his analytical, management and enterprise skills – key attributes employers seek in graduates.

“Learning at Flinders provides the opportunity to stand out in the market,” says Inderjit, “there are numerous learning aspects, which teaches leadership skills and resource management. Additionally, a Flinders degree is well known around the world for its excellence and creativity.”

Inderjit plans on an international career, working across a diverse array of multinational companies in the civil engineering field.

“I’ve learned all the structure designs, traffic and project management skills from this course, and Australian standards and industry requirements,” he says, confident of his post-graduate job-outcomes.

“Multinational companies are looking for multi-tasking employees and this course covers all aspects of demand.”

State-of-the-art facilities

The $120 million Tonsley Innovation District co-locates expertise in computer science, engineering, and mathematics. Together with the Flinders Medical Device Research Institute and the Centre for Nanoscale Science and Technology, they are housed alongside some of Adelaide’s biggest businesses and key industries. It is also a hub for entrepreneurs and future employers who are creating next-generation start-ups through the Flinders New Venture Institute.

“Learning at Flinders gives me a feeling of intense enthusiasm,” says Inderjit, “the facilities are exceptional. With all the practical labs, software labs, lecture theatres, reading areas and sports activities all under the same roof.”

It’s not just the technical labs that appeal to Inderjit.

“Μy favourite place is the reading area. I believe this is the most creative area among the university because all the best brains sit there and I can feel the vibes, which motivate me.”

Taking a break is necessary sometimes – “I love to go to the gaming area when I’m stressed with my studies, I relax and play squash and table tennis.”

Living in Adelaide

Choosing to study in Adelaide was easy for Inderjit, as a safe and calm living environment also factored into his decision.

“I think Adelaide is one of the best places for students to study in Australia.  It’s essential to have a peaceful and healthy environment for studying.”

The Flinders community has also been a welcoming presence for the Indian student.

“The student clubs and faculty organise a large number of events, which give you the chance to have fun and socialise – while enhancing your language and leadership skills.”

Why choose Flinders?

“Studying at Flinders will give you the opportunity to learn and grow your skills in all manners. The world-class level of teaching and course content will set you up for a career in engineering or related fields,” says Inderjit of his civil engineering degree.

“In the end, I would say come to Flinders to learn and it will open up countless opportunities for your future professional development.”
